Central Illinois’ Sinfonia Da Camera, led by award-winning maestro and music director Ian Hobson, invites all to celebrate the unbounded power and imagination of classical music as they honor everlasting masterpieces by legendary composers such as Mozart, Williams, and Mendelssohn. Winter Fantasia offers seven iconic symphonies — including Vivaldi’s Winter Concerto and Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso — performed by first-class musicians, University of Illinois faculty, and nationally distinguished freelancers from across the States. Sinfonia da Camera: Winter Fantasia concludes the 2025 slate of performances by the acclaimed chamber orchestra from Central Illinois, with featured violinist Andrés Cardenes at the Virginia Theatre — Saturday, December 13. Sinfonia’s 42nd season continues an ovation-brimmed run following their Golden Anniversary concert last fall, stretching into next year with the much-awaited Rach 3 and American Spring shows.
Helmed by award-winning pianist, founder, music director, and conductor Ian Hobson Hobson, Sinfonia da Camera punctuates a phenomenal 2025 finale on their Winter Fantasia event. Hobson and his orchestra, composed of world-class musicians from the University of Illinois’ staff and student body, with exceptional freelance talents from the regional and national levels, give us seven symphonic marvels by the likes of Vivaldi, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and more. Each piece will fan a fiery adoration for the classical, stirring souls with such vigorously expressive performances exhibiting the serenity of Williams’ fantasia and the exuberance of the “Italian” symphony by Mendelssohn. Additionally, Sinfonia’s principal hornist, Bernhard Scully, will take the reins during a radiant rendition of Mozart’s concerto.
Cuban-born soloist Andrés Cardenes will back Sinfonia Da Camera on violin. Our guest, also an internationally recognized concertmaster, will enchant through his virtuosic techniques, imparting sultry warmth, elegance, and beguiling charm to the seasonal concertos by Vivaldi and Piazzolla, not to mention Saint-Saëns’ iconic showpiece.
