The Virginia Theatre at the Champaign Park District presents “Radio Soul! The Early Songs of Elvis Costello” this Thursday, October 14th, 2025, with guest artist Charlie Sexton. During the home stretch of their tour’s second stint, BAFTA/MTV/GRAMMY Award winner Elvis Costello and The Imposters will again perform songs from a third of his 33-album studio discography LIVE on stage, chronicling punk rock’s meteoric rise in England and the advent of British New Wave from the period’s pop music-oriented fare.
Elvis Costello, whose biggest hits include the 1989 Top 20 Billboard single “Veronica,” offers a stunningly vintage music show this fall in partnership with AEG Presents and Exceptional Artists. “Radio Soul!” 2025 commemorates the origin of one of England’s most accomplished songwriting talents, applauded by Rolling Stone and trade experts for his “near unparalleled versatility” and highly expressive innovation. With his backing band, The Imposters, Costello rediscovers cultural classics through the mid-1970s and ‘80s. This event recounts tales from his GRAMMY Hall of Fame 1977 debut, My Aim Is True, featuring his soon-to-be-classic ballad “Alison” and his first charting single, “Watching the Detectives.” As the evening deepens, fans will visit every landmark record up to the star’s 1986 issues: the acoustic, country-influenced King of America and the post-punk Blood & Chocolate, which produced the New Wave arena signature “I Want You.” Between these capstones, our main event will also bring a sprawling repertoire spanning Top 30 UK singles “Radio Radio,” “Oliver’s Army,” and “High Fidelity,” with rave-reviewed follow-ups “Man Out Of Time,” “Green Shirt,” and “Brilliant Mistake.”
“Radio Soul! The Early Songs of Elvis Costello,” performed by Elvis Costello and The Imposters with Charlie Sexton, confirmed 22 extra stops from the tail end of summer to fall. Renowned for his 1985 Pictures for Pleasure album, Sexton delivers an electrifying opener thanks to his blues-rock expertise and lead guitar experience with legendary songwriter Bob Dylan. Once a 20th-century vaudevillian house and now a fully restored performing arts center, their host lends the show a historic marvel from its breathtaking architecture, state-of-the-art acoustic production, and modern-day comfort/amenities.
